Snow, Ice and Slush – Schnee, Eis und Schneematsch

Well it’s been snowing = es schneit and freezing = es friert again! We’ve had lots of frost – der Frost and we’ve all been suffering in the cold = die Kälte. In fact, in some parts of Scotland = Schottland it’s been more than 20 degrees below freezing = mehr als 20 Grad Kälte, which is pretty impressive!
The snow = der Schnee has been causing all sorts of problems on the roads and our local authority is rumoured to have run out of grit = der Streusand. I’m told there’s panic-buying = der Panikkauf of cat-litter = die Katzenstreu; people are apparently using it as a substitute to de-ice their drive-ways!
However, today is bringing the start of the thaw = das Tauwetter. Hopefully, we won’t have too much trouble with ice = das Eis as it thaws = es taut. But do watch out for black ice = das Glatteis and be careful in the slush = der Schneematsch. It’ll be slippery = schlüpfrig or rutschig..!
